1601 & 1630 6th Ave. N.

Kelly Ingram Park was the main battleground in the 1963 Birmingham Campaign, dubbed “Project C" (with “C” meaning "Confrontation"). The campaign was the joint effort of the local Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR) and the national Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) from April - May 1963. The park was named in honor of a Birmingham firefighter who was the first American sailor killed in World War I. In the 1990s, Dr. Richard Arrington, Jr., Birmingham's first African-American mayor, redesigned the park to commemorate its civil rights significance as “A Place of Revolution, A Place of Reconciliation."

"Public spaces were often the most embattled sites of black opposition.”
Robin D. G. Kelley
Historian.

Lesson C2: Kelly Ingram Park is called a place of "Revolution and Reconciliation" How can one move beyond a violent revolution to a place of reconciliation between two opposed parties?
