Inscription.
The dates of this arrival and departure are unknown. What is known is that the Calus (a) Indians were a very warlike tribe that did not want the Spanish in their territory, and so they fought with them and killed many. After two or three months of this constant conflict, Juan Ponce de Leσn was himself wounded in the thigh by a poisoned arrow. Knowing he was badly wounded, he ordered the survivors to take him to Havana. He died there in July, 1521, of his infected wound. In 1559 his remains were removed to San Juan de Puerto Rico where they now rest in the Cathedral of San Juan, P.R.

Juan Ponce de Leσn's epitaph reads:
Beneath this structure lie the bones of a lion
who performed deeds mightier than his name.
