Père David's deer survive today thanks to over a century of careful conservation and caring individuals.

around 0 A.D. | Deer kept in Imperial Hunting Park in Nan Hai-Tze near Beijing.

around 200 A.D. | Deer presumed extinct in the wild.

1865 | Deer first viewed in the imperial park by a Westerner: Père David sent to Paris for identification.

1894 | Floods destroyed the imperial park wall; many deer killed and eaten.

1898 | Herd started by Duke of Bedford in Woburn, England; all Père David's deer alive today are descendents of this herd.

1900 | Last deer in China killed during Boxer Rebellion.

1949 | First Père David's deer bred in North America here at the Bronx Zoo.

late 1900s | Zoos around the world cooperate for successful breeding of this species.

1985 | Deer reintroduced to China.

Saving Other Asian Deer
Musk deer are poached for their musk gland, found only in males. We must protect the Siberian musk deer in Russia and recorded the first evidence of Kashmir musk deer in Afghanistan in 60 years.
