Also known as the spectacled bear, Andean bears live high in the cloud forests of the Andes Mountains.

The Queens Zoo works with other zoos to breed Andean bears as part of the Species Survival Plan, a program that helps ensure healthy, genetically diverse bears in zoos.
Our Andean bears Nicole and Bouba are one of the few breeding pairs in the world! Nicole came from the National Zoo in D.C. and Bouba came from a zoo in France.

In addition to our breeding program at the Queens Zoo, we have been working in South America to study and protect wild Andean bears since 1977!
