A Rare Bird
• Red-crowned cranes are the second rarest crane species after the whooping crane of North America-only 1700 remain.
• Red-crowned cranes mate for life.

Your Columbus Zoo and Aquarium supports the radio tracking of red-crowned cranes at a reserve in Russia. Zoos send eggs—35 as of 2005—to the reserve for hatching and the tracking will provide information about migratory patterns.

Diet: insects, fish, frogs, reeds
Habitat: breed in wetlands; winter in rice paddies, mudflats
