Studying Grizzly Clues: Traditional Methods
Our field staff helps protect bears in the wild by studying where they live and now they move around. Since observing grizzlies can be challenging, we look for clues they leave behind.

Studying Grizzly Clues: Modern Methods
Recent advances in genetic technology allow us to extract DNA from bears' fur. We used scented stations surrounded by barbed wire fencing to collect fur. When a bear comes to investigate the small, it painlessly leaves behind tufts of fur on the wire–and thus, its DNA.

From Clues to Conservation
Our "forensic science" on grizzlies led the Canadian government to greatly expand the size of a national park where bears live.

Nahanni National Park Expands
Before 2009
1,840 sq miles
about 1/2 the size of Yellowstone National Park
The park was too small and too narrow to provide adequate habitat for wide-ranging grizzly bears.

Now
13,760 sq miles

about 4x larger than Yellowstone National Park
Now, it is one of the largest and wildest national parks in the world–much better for bears!

Bear research takes place in remote areas away from trails that humans use.
