Inscription. Turmeric plants are harvested for their brightly colored underground stems, called rhizomes. Turmeric rhizomes have been used for over a century for medicine, food, and in spiritual practices in the Caribbean. A key ingredient in curry, turmeric is a popular spice in doubles, roti, dal, and other dishes from Guyana, Trinidad, and Jamaica.
