Mount Vernon in Knox County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Mary Ann Ball Bickerdyke
The Mount Vernon Historic Walking Tour
After the death of her own infant daughter, she commuted to learning all she could about medicine. After her husband died, she volunteered to take donated supplies to Union troops. When she saw the filthy conditions, she stayed and begun unofficially cleaning the camp, and caring for the men.
Later she followed Grant's army through the West and Sherman through the South, setting up hospitals along the way. To the men she helped, she was affectionately known as "Mother Bickerdyke."
