Prairie du Rocher in Randolph County, Illinois — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
1916 - Fort de Chartres Becomes a State Park
As the State of Illinois' second state park, Fort de Chartres, restoration began with the gun powder magazine in 1917. The state had taken ownership of the grounds in 1913. Further restorative efforts followed through the 1920's by uncovering the foundation. In the late 1920's and through the 1930's, the U. S. WPA rebuilt the land gate entrance and the two currently standing stone buildings. The fort's current economic impact is an attraction that brings 50,000 annual visitors to this area with an estimate of $6,350,000 (2022).
