Inscription. This alley is named for Emma Nichols, a woman who found freedom in Jackson on the Underground Railroad. Emma was born a slave in Virginia in 1830. She later escaped slavery and came to Jackson seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad. Emma and her family lived the rest of their lives in Jackson. This alley honors her and the many others who found freedom in our community.
