Inscription.
This hiking path is located on the Old Coast Guard Road, which was established during World War II. In the first half of 1942, German submarines sank more than 35 ships off Florida's coast prompting the military to establish a beach patrol. The road was used by Guardsmen who were stationed in the area to provide a continuous day and night watch for enemy saboteurs and U-boats. Accompanied by sentry dogs, the scouts patrolled the beach on foot and horseback. They also manned lookout towers at Flagler Beach, Painters Hill, and one just north of Mala Compra Road.

Erected by Flagler County.
