Perth Amboy in Middlesex County, New Jersey — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Perth Amboy, NJ
Site of the first successful Scottish settlement in the colonies
In commemoration of the Scottish passengers on the ship Henry and Francis which sailed from Leith Scotland on September 5, 1685 with 200 Scotts seeking refuge and religious freedom. A great many suffered and died during the 15 week journey.
A number of passengers signed an oath that stated they left Scotland
" by an unjust sentence of banishment for owning truth and standing by duty "
" they stand obligated to resist and testify against all that is contrary to the word of God "
Perth Amboy was their beacon of freedom.
