A Group of Citizens with a Vision

You are located at the western end of the refuge at Route 420. This side of the refuge is best known for fishing in the creeks and deep lagoons that were created during the early stages of Interstate 95's construction. Soils were dredged and the resulting depressions became the lagoons.
Established in 1972, the refuge protects approximately 1000 acres of diverse habitat, particularly freshwater tidal marsh. Local residents rallied to help create the refuge when they learned how the proposed route of Interstate 95 would have decimated the marshland. These caring citizens joined together and helped preserve the land you are visiting today.
Please also visit the eastern side of the refuge to enjoy the visitor center, trails, and boardwalks.
