Althemese Pemberton Barnes Park. . Althemese Barnes has been a leader in historic preservation for decades. She is the founder and Executive Director Emeritus of the John G. Riley House Center/Museum and was central to the establishment of the Florida African American Heritage Preservation Network. Other hallmarks of her professional career (1985-2020) include restoration of the Greenwood, Hickory Hill, Munree and Betton Road cemeteries; establishment of the Frenchtown "Soul Voices" Marker trail; documentation of more than 200 historical publications, documentaries and oral histories; convening the inaugural "Journey to Emancipation" conference to raise awareness about Florida's Emancipation Day of May 20,1865; sponsorship of 82 interns; and leading the Smokey Hollow Community Historic Preservation Project. Barnes was also an organizer of the United States Colored Troops. The Tallahassee City Commission voted on October 27, 2021, to name this park in her honor in recognition of her many contributions.
