1. Dorothy Day Marker
Inscription. Dorothy Day's compassion for the poor began in childhood when her family was forced to live in a Chicago tenement. She dropped out of the University of Illinois to move to New York, where she worked for several radical newspapers. Day was baptized into the Catholic Church in 1927. Five years later, she met Peter Maurin, with whom she founded The Catholic Works, a paper dedicated to Catholic social teaching and the peaceful transformation of society. She welcomed the homeless who knocked on her door, establishing the first "house of hospitality." A pacifist and civil rights activist, Day endured several arrests and imprisonment for civil disobedience.
