Inscription.
Merchant and ship-owner, Étienne Dutilh was born on 17 November 1751 into a prominent Huguenot family in Clairac, France. At 16 he moved to Amsterdam, where he joined the extended Dutilh family business in international trade.

During the 1770s he was a merchant in Rotterdam, London, and Saint-Domingue before permanently settling in Philadelphia in 1783 and anglicizing his name to Stephen. He had several mercantile houses before establishing the firm Dutilh & Wachsmuth in 1790.

1795, he married his relatively Catharine Madelaine Dutilh in Amsterdam. They had seven children. Stephen Dutilh died on 26 January 1810.
