1. Conserving California's Coastal Treasures Marker
Inscription. A statewide network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) safeguards California's rich coastal resources. San Diego-Scripps SMCA, the first marine protected area in the state, was established in 1929 as the San Diego Marine Life Refuge. It surrounded the first Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) pier in recognition of the valuable research and teaching conducted here by the University of California. Scientific research of the sandy plain, rocky intertidal, and submarine canyon continue, along with marine education, surfing, swimming, tidepooling, birdwatching, and beach enjoyment by the public.
