Inscription. Dred Scott was born a slave in Virginia and later became a resident of Missouri. He and his wife, Harriet, signed petitions for freedom, initiated under Missouri law, in 1846. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld slavery, denied the legality of black citizens and declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional resulting in a catalyst for Civil War. Mr. Scott's body is buried in Calvary Cemetery.
