The Twin Mounds
By Devry Becker Jones (CC0), March 27, 2023
This large pair of mounds, known as the Twin Mounds, is probably a mortuary complex, although no excavations have been made into these mounds. We believe that a building on top of the flat-topped mound (# 60 or Fox Mound) may have served as a "charnel house," where bodies of important people were prepared for rial, and perhaps buried in the adjacent conical mound (#59 or Roundtop Mound).
Soil corings around them also suggest that these mounds were built up on a shared platform. The Twin Mounds are at the south end of the Grand Plaza, opposite Monks Mound.
