1. Clara Barton Marker
Inscription.
"I have an almost complete disregard of precedent, and a faith in the possibility of something better…I defy the tyranny of precedent. I go for anything new that might improve the past."
- Clara Barton

Born: December 25, 1821
Died: April 12, 1912
Hometown: Bordentown, New Jersey
Inducted to New Jersey Hall of Fame: 2008

In 1852, Clara Barton created New Jersey's first free public school, founded on her belief that education should be available to everyone. Within a year, she grew the school from six to 600 students before taking a U.S. Patent Office position in Washington, D.C. When the Civil War erupted, Barton risked her life to bring supplies and support to soldiers on the field, which earned her the nickname "Angel of the Battlefield." At the age of 59, Barton founded the American Red Cross, contributing to her legacy of service to humanity as one of the most honored women in American history.
