Imagine more than two million acres of deep forests, rugged hills, and fast-flowing streams conserved for your benefit and enjoyment-the largest block of public land between New York City and Chicago. This is the Pennsylvania Wilds, covering 12 counties in northcentral Pennsylvania.

Awaiting your exploration are:
• more than 1.5 million acres of state forest and game lands
• 27 state parks
• the 500,000-acre Allegheny National Forest
• Pine Creek Gorge, known as Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon
• 8 wild areas and 24 natural areas
• the largest wild elk herd in the Northeast
• thousands of miles of back-packing trails, bike paths and trout fishing streams
• the darkest skies in the East at Cherry Springs State Park
• some of the most valuable hardwood forests in the world

But what you enjoy today as the Pennsylvania Wilds was not here 100 years ago. Pennsylvania's conservation legacy began at the turn of the 20th century after the expansive forests were completely logged, leaving blighted mountain slopes and sediment-choked streams. It is only through the efforts of Pennsylvania conservationists led by Joseph Rothrock, Gifford Pinchot, Maurice Goddard, Mira Lloyd Dock and others, that these forests have been restored to offer outstanding outdoor recreation, quality water
