1. Europeans Along the Alabama River Marker
Inscription. 1540 expedition of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto was first to penetrate Alabama interior. After advancing down Coosa Valley these adventurers camped nearby at Towasa (TO THE WEST) and then followed river on its southern course. In 1702. French established Mobile and began ascent of river. The next year, a trading party died at hands of Alibamu tribe near this site. By 1714 Natives and French had agreed to building of Fort Toulouse upstream at River's origin. It became a major trading post and defensive position against advancing English. At conclusion of French-Indian War, France lost this region to England.
