Interesting Names
Charles A. Lindbergh State Park
— Little Elk/Schoessling Unit —
The Little Elk River was known to the Ojibwe as Omushkoso-sibi, which translates to "Elk River." Elk were historically present in this area. The translation was modified to "Little Elk River" in the 1850s to avoid confusing it with another river bearing the same name.
The Little Elk/Schoessling Unit is comprised of two separate additions. The 40-acre Schoessling unit (the northernmost part of the property) was donated to the State of Minnesota by the Ray Schoessling family in 2001 with the intent that it be used forever as a State Park or Scientific and Natural Area.
The State of Minnesota acquired the Little Elk addition in 2007. This 68-acre parcel had been known as the Little Elk Heritage Preserve when it was administered by the Institute for Minnesota Archaeology.
The adjacent parcels comprise a total of 108 acres, administered by Charles A. Lindbergh State Park, which is on the southwest side of Little Falls along the Mississippi River.
Erected 2010 by Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
