Gunflint Trail Area
The Gunflint Trail is one of Minnesota's most famous roads.
Along its 56 miles are trails on old railroads, clear lakes, moose viewing areas, giant magnetic boulders, ancient meteor strikes, recovering fire areas, and more. Cap off your visit with the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center, located in the historic Chik-Wauk Lodge at the end of the Trail.

Gunflint wolves in Manhattan?
The Gunflint Trail is known across the country for its natural beauty and setting. Gunflint Lake is even featured in the world famous American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It is the setting for the wolf exhibit in the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals, so even New Yorkers can enjoy the aurora on a moonlit night over the lake.

People have lived here a long time.
Forest Service Passport in Time (PIT) archeological digs on ancient beach ridges in this area helped discover 8000 year old tool-making sites. Here, ancestral Native Americans created stone points from the local flint-like chert and discarded their mistakes. The same chert was used later as flints in flintlock muskets, leading to the names Gunflint Lake and Gunflint Trail.

Erected by United States Forest Service.
