1. Bayou Maçon Marker
Inscription. You are standing on the Eastern edge of the Maçon (pronounced Mason) Ridge bluff. Just past the fence ground elevation drops 20 feet down to the Bayou Maçon and the Mississippi flood plains.

The Bayou Maçon may not have existed during the Poverty Point culture occupation (1700 B.C. - 1100 B.C.). The Mississippi River was closer at this time and may have formed a shallow back water lake between it and the Maçon Ridge.

Later prehistoric groups like the Coles Creek period people (A.D. 800 - A.D. 1100) used the Bayou Maçon for transportation, fishing, and drinking water.

In historic times steamboats travelled the Bayou Maçon to deliver supplies and pick up cotton from towns along its banks.

Those who lived at Poverty Point more than 3,000 years ago left no written records of their day-to-day lives. We know that the site was a ceremonial center that was once home to hundreds or perhaps thousands of people, as well as a trading hub unmatched by any in North America at that time.
