1. Welcome to the Bidwell House Museum Marker
Inscription.
The house you see at the end of the path was built around 1760 by Reverend Adonijah Bidwell (1716-1784), the first Minster of Township #1, today's Monterey and Tyringham.

The house stayed in the Bidwell family for close to 100 years until it was sold in the mid-19th century. In 1960, the house was purchased by Jack Hargis and David Brush, who spent close to 25 years restoring and furnishing it in the style of the 18th century. The Museum opened to the public in 1990 and continues to be a resource for learning about early Berkshire history, the lives of the first inhabitants of Township #1, and the Indigenous peoples who had lived here for centuries.

Guided tours of the house are available by appointment and can be taken from Memorial Day to October on Monday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Contact the Museum at 413-528-6888 to set up your tour. We also offer an "Outside-the-House" self-guided tour.

The gardens and grounds are open daily, free of charge, year-round. The Museum sits on 194 acres and has 6 miles of trails. You can also walk along the Native American Interpretive Trail to learn about the Mohicans who resided on this land.

Trail maps can be found at this kiosk and on our website. Additional trail maps and maps for the Outside-the-House tour and Native American Interpretive
