Constructing Patterson Boulevard
| | Patterson Boulevard Canal Parkway | |
The filling of the canal began in 1928. Existing, unfilled segments of the canal had taken on the appearance of open sewers as they waited to be built upon. Associated construction included the elevated railroad, for which canal buildings such as the Osceola Mill were demolished. The elevated railroad bridge over the filled canal bed was built by the American Bridge Company in 1930. The American Bridge Company was responsible for the construction of several large scale projects, including the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, during the 1930s.
