8500 - 5000 Years Ago
Delaware Bay developed further as rising seas spread over the coastal plain, spurring formation of brackish water tidal marshes along its edges. Sea levels were 60 feet lower than they are today.
Archaic Period of Habitation on Delmarva (6500-3000 BC)
As climate warmed, oak, hemlock, and pine forests developed. Rising sea levels create [unreadable] inland swamps. Deer, turkey, and other wild game proliferated. Native people lived in small, mobile groups, setting up camps along coastal marshes, rivers, swamps and other waterways to hunt and gather from the rich seasonal fish, game, and plant resources available. Fishing nets (as illustrated above) were made of cordage woven from various plant fibers. Diverse and specialized tools were also developed for harvesting other plant and animal resources. Among them was the Atlatl, or spear-thrower (image left), which became a key weapon in the early natives' arsenal for hunting game animals.
