Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Atlantic Coastal Plain
The Atlantic Coastal Plain is a flat area located east of the Piedmont fall line. Rivers and streams carry silt from the Appalachian and Piedmont regions to the Atlantic Coastal Plain. There, rivers slow down and deposit sediment into the marshlands. This flat plain was once covered by lush forest, until much of the land was cleared for agriculture.
Nearly 11,600 miles of tidal marshland and islands fringe the shoreline of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The marshes are a natural filter for water entering the Bayabsorbing pollutants, sediment and excess fertilizer from watershed runoff. Marshlands are 'food factories' and nurseries for many native species.
[Caption:]
Soil erosion and fertilizer runoff severely degrade the Bay and harm its inhabitants. We can keep the Bay healthy and vital by limiting development and using best farm management practices.
