1. Anne Conover Dedication Marker
This nature trail is dedicated to the memory of Anne R. Conover in recognition of her contribution to the cause of preserving the tidal wetlands of Connecticut, and to her vision in protecting 200 acres of tidal wetlands that today form the core of the Guilford Salt Meadows Sanctuary - two landmarks in wetlands conservation history.
Anne Conover's Legacy
In 1933, Anne and Woolsey Conover purchased this property (formerly the Dudley Farm, and then the Cornell Farm). In the words of Joel Helander, Town of Guilford historian:
"Their 58-year tenure in the valley of Clapboard Hill was marked by noble deeds in the name of conservation. Just when the pristine East River, winding through the lush salt meadows like a silver thread, could have been spoiled, Anne Conover stepped forward and made a daring challenge. She rallied her neighbors to donate their salt meadow parcels to create a National Audubon Society sanctuary. Her donation was the first. And she rallied the state to enact tidal wetlands legislation [culminating in The Tidal Wetlands Act of 1969] that has helped preserve one of Connecticut's most irreplaceable natural resources."
With this dedication, Audubon recognizes the vision, determination, and diplomacy exercised by Anne Conover in bringing about landmark conservation achievements.
