1. Chilkoot Trail Marker

Here at Bennett you are in Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site, one of Canada's nearly 900 national historic sites. Each of these special places has its own story and is an important part of Canadian history and identity. Parks Canada's heritage places are found in every province and territory. They represent a legacy that, once lost, can never be regained. Each year significant places associated with Canada's history are damaged or destroyed, either by natural causes or through human actions. As you walk around Bennett townsite please be respectful of this special place.

Stay on the defined trails, and do not touch or remove any artifacts.

Traditional routes
The coastal and inland aboriginal peoples had an extensive and well-established trading and travel network by the mid-18th century. For many years the Tlingit of the Lynn Canal had a monopoly over routes through the Coast Mountains into the interior; the Chilkoot was controlled by the Tlingit Raven clan from the village of Chilkoot, south of Skagway.

Routes traditionnelles
Au milieu du XVIII^e siècle, les Autochtones de la côtes et de l'intérieur avaient un réseau de commerce et de communication vaste et bien établi. Pendant de nombreuses années, les Tlingit du chenal Lynn ont conservé le monopole des routes traversant la chaîne côtière vers l'intérieur; le col Chilkoot était contrôlé par le clan du corbeau des Tlingit établi au village de Chilkoot, au sud de Skagway.

Coastal Tlingit and inland First Nations people of the area, who were skilled and strong packers and had detailed knowledge of the terrain and weather, packed goods over the trail for a fee during the Klondike Gold Rush.
