An Impressive Accomplishment
As you look at this dam, consider what it took to complete this three-year-long project. It is impressive to think that the center portion consists of 150,000 cubic yards of concrete. It is amazing that the earthen section is comprised of 1,250,000 cubic yards of compacted earth. Deer Creek Dam is a significant engineering accomplishment. In fact, the dam was recognized with the Army Chief of Engineers Design Award.
Opened-Out or Closed-In
There are a total of nine gates which help regulate the amount of water in the lake. The same amount of water flowing into the lake from its headwaters is also let out at the spillway to maintain a constant lake level. More or less water can be released which lowers or raises the water level. In the spring, gates are closed to allow the lake level to rise for summer recreational activities. Gates are opened in the fall to let the level drop, permitting more space for flood water.
