1. History of Dugout Canoes Marker
Inscription.
Because of the many inland lakes and waterways and protected coastal waters, canoe making in Florida has a long history. Much of what we know about dugout canoes comes from the nearly 300 archaeological sites in Florida that have canoes or log boats-more than any other state.

Millennia ago, the abundance of cypress and pine trees needed to make dugout canoes and the simple technique original peoples developed made dugout canoes were efficient to build. The trees were felled and then hollowed out by slowly burning out the middle and carving the burned wood from the center.

The oldest canoes found in Florida are over 6,000 years old. Seminole and Miccosukee Indians continue to keep alive the long tradition of wooden canoe making in Florida.
