1. The Middle Kuskokwim River Marker
Inscription.
The Kuskokwim River (Kusquqvak in Central Yup'ik) runs 724 miles (1,130 km) through Southwest Alaska and is the setting for dozens of communities and thousands of people. For several millennia, indigenous people have fished these waters, and hunted, trapped, and gathered plants along its shores. The natural bounty of the land provides food, shelter, and materials for clothing and transportation.

The contemporary Yup'ik, Athabascan, Russian, Euroamerican, and mixed descent residents of the Middle Kuskokwim villages engage fully with modern society while continuing to connect with their shared traditions through stories, celebrations, and subsistence activities.
