Inscription. The pecan is the largest of our native hickories. It is a southern tree in origin; however, it has been extensively cultivated, both by Native Americans and then by American colonists. Its range now extends into central Illinois. It is one of the most important cultivated nuts in America. Today, there are over 500 cultivars, many bred for increased nut production or thinner shells for easier shelling.

Erected by Spring Valley Nature Club.
