1. Ironwood Marker
Inscription. Ironwood is named for its very heavy, extremely hard wood. It never attains the size to be commercially valuable, but was formerly used to frame the woodland lodges of Native Americans, and make bows, tool handles, and sled runners. This small tree is also called 'hop hornbeam' due to the hop-like fruits, visible in autumn. It often retains some of its dried brown leaves throughout the winter, dropping them in spring.

Erected by Spring Valley Nature Club.
