1. Cemetery surrounded by Boxwood Marker
Inscription. To the right is a cemetery surrounded by boxwood where one hundred and fifty-six men and two women are interred. The remains were discovered in 1930 during the excavations of the Palace gardens. Items found at the time of discovery indicate that some of the burials are likely soldiers of the Continental Army who died at the Palace when it was used by George Washington as a military hospital at the end of the Revolutionary War in 1781.

This area is currently closed to visitation as part of our efforts to control the blight that is killing boxwoods throughout much of the eastern United States. Thank you for helping us preserve our historic gardens!
