1. Green Springs Park Marker
Inscription. Welcome to Green Springs Park-a 36-acre public area with a remarkable past, a famous sulphur spring, and recreational features including a playground and trails. Volusia County hopes that your visit will be as special as the resource itself.

The fact is, this place has long been popular. At least six thousand years ago, native people lived here, drawn by local food sources and springs. Then came a procession of visitors and residents — Seminole Wars soldiers from a nearby stockade; a fiery settler, innkeeper and politician building a community in the 1840s; pioneering anthropologists; mobs of tourists after the Civil War; and twentieth-century fun-seekers relaxing at a private swimming hole for ten cents.

Swimming is not allowed in Green Springs Park, but active recreation never was the only attraction here. Nineteenth-century visitors noted the land's mysterious power, and some judged it the height of St. Johns River scenery. "It is," declared an experienced traveler in 1845, "one of the most picturesque and romantic spots that I have ever seen."
