Nelsonville in Athens County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Camp Site of Lord Dunmore
In 1774, Lord Dunmore, British Royal Governor of Virginia, including what is now Kentucky, camped on this site while in pursuit of Shawnee Chief, Cornstalk and Mingo Chief, Logan. Native Americans had been raiding south of and along the Ohio River. Defeating the Indians in what is known as "Lord Dunmore's War", Chief Cornstalk agreed to stay north of the Ohio River. It was at the end of this conflict that Chief Logan gave his famous Lament; "Who is there to mourn Logan? Not one."
The original marker, erected here in 1938 by the Elizabeth Zane Dew Chapter, D.A.R. was stolen and replaced by Nelsonville Citizens in 2021. Its rock base was once used in the Hocking Canal which passed through Nelsonville along what is now Canal Street.
Erected 2021.
