Inscription. Farming, secure food sources and land ownership were key issues for both sides. In 1800s Ireland, farm production was threatened by British absentee landlords and the potato blight. With little food to sustain them, and a lack of land on which to prosper, many Irish immigrated to the United States and lent their support to the Fenian Brotherhood.

Hoping for solidarity among the Irish and fellow farmers in Bertie Township, some Fenians sought to avoid accusations of oppression by offering Fenian currency in exchange for supplies. Others forced farmers to relinquish their goods at gunpoint.
