Inscription.
You are standing on a kame — a gravel hill formed 70,000 years ago by a melting glacier — in this case, a glacier thicker than the Willis Tower is tall.

As the glacier melted, streams flowed through channels in the ice, breaking apart rock carried within the glacier and depositing it here as smooth cobble.

This kame covers only 11 of Blackwell Forest Preserve's 1,300 acres, but the true measure of its worth lies in its biological richness. More than 270 different kinds of plants grow here, making this kame one of the county's most diverse natural areas. Forest Preserve District ecologists and volunteers are working to restore this natural wonder to its full potential.

Excerpt: "Visitors at Blackwell walk on land shaped by the retreating Wisconsin Glacier 12,000 to 15,000 years ago. After the glacier’s retreat, savannas with widely-spaced oak trees formed on the higher ground while the lower-lying ground became home to marsh and prairie plants. At Blackwell’s McKee Marsh, the 13,000-year-old skeleton of a woolly mammoth — one of the oldest finds of its kind in northeastern Illinois — was discovered in 1977."
