1. Stormwater Management at the Main Entrance Marker
Permeable pavement in this parking lot captures and filters rainwater, then returns it to the earth.
When it rains, stormwater enters the City's combined sewer system where it mixes with sanitary waste from our homes, schools, and buildings. This mixture is then conveyed to a local wastewater treatment plant. During some storms, the treatment plants can become overwhelmed and release untreated stormwater and sanitary waste into nearby water bodies. Improvements to this parking lot in 2017 have made it easier for NYBG to manage stormwater on-site, relieving some of the burden on the City's sewer system and helping to improve the health of the East River and Long Island Sound.
Rain from the roadway runs downhill and to these parking spaces, where it is absorbed into the spaces between the concrete pavers. Known as green infrastructure, this pavement filters waters as it drains slowly through multiple layers of gravel and crushed stone. The filtered water then seeps into the soil below.
