The Health of Deep Creek Lake
Deep Creek Lake 100 Years
| | 1925 2025 | |
Like all Maryland lakes, Deep Creek Lake is manmade and was created in 1925 for a hydroelectric generating station. Overall, Deep Creek Lake is considered to have good water quality that supports some of the best freshwater fishing in Maryland, excellent recreational activities such as swimming and boating, and a robust and diverse native submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) population. To provide managers with much needed information to support decisions regarding lake management activities, Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has been conducting water quality and habitat monitoring in Deep Creek Lake since 2009. Critical water quality monitoring results depicted on the map are available to the public on DNRs website.
DNR actively manages invasive submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) such as Hydrilla while working to restore native SAV, which is essential for reducing nutrients, stabilizing sediments, and supporting fish habitats, along with educational workshops to engage the community. The Launch Steward program was implemented to inspect boats entering the Lake to reduce the threat of invasive species. The Deep Creek Watershed Foundation, DNR Lake Management Office, and University of Maryland Extensions "10 in 10" project and the WaterWise/Rain Barrel Program have been instrumental in addressing erosion, sediment control, and stormwater management.
A notable State funded demonstration project involved dredging accumulated sediments in Arrowhead Cove, showcasing a concerted effort to maintain recreational waters. The dredging project began in the fall of 2023 with lowering of lake levels, the installation of a cofferdam and the physical removal of over 11,000 cubic yards of material, or 734 dump trucks of sediment that was transported to the county landfill. The project has provided greater cove water depths, allowing for increased boating access and recreational activities. Given the significant costs of mechanical dredging, further assessments will determine its viability for future sediment management efforts.
