Inscription. Tulip trees are native to the northeastern United States and many grow in NYBG's Thain Family forest. Known commercially as yellow-poplar or tulip-poplar, tulip trees grow tall and straight, reaching heights of up to 200 feet. The wood of tulip trees is light and strong. Native Americans throughout the Northeast, including the Lenape, whose ancestral land extended from the lower Hudson Valley to present-day Delaware, carved dugout canoes from individual tulip tree trunks. The tree is named for its cup-shaped spring flowers' resemblance to tulips, although the plants are not related. When the tree is not in bloom, identify it by its distinctive four-lobed leaves, which turn bright gold in fall.
