1. Salt Lick Point Marker
Inscription.
Salt Lick Point marks the place where the manufacture of salt was carried on in early time. The Indians probably used this point to obtain their salt. This saline trade was one of the earliest established in the West. Gen. John Edgar, of Kaskaskia was its first proprietor, and placed it in operation about the year 1802. Among its owners was a man by the name of Boise, a resident of Harrisonville. He sank twelve wells, and manufactured salt for three years which brought a good price. This Point is 832 feet above sea level.

1. Hiking is required to reach this marker.
To access this marker from the parking area (off Bluff and Quarry Roads), take the Salt Lick Trail, which is about one mile to the intersection of the Newman Trail. You can also access it through the Johnson Trail, but would have to take the Newman Trail after a mile. Both the Newman and Salt Lick Trails are very steep, and it is recommended to be careful while on the trails. The pinpoint on the map is the estimated location, as judged by looking at other maps of the trails.
