1. Rattlesnake Master Marker
Inscription. This prickly prairie plant is called Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium). Because plant names can be hundreds of years old, we sometimes don't know their origin. Over 300 years ago, people believed rattlesnake master sap could prevent and treat rattlesnake bites. They also thought the plant looked like a pitchfork, which people used when they encountered snakes. Today, there's medicine to treat rattlesnake bites, and we know it's best to leave snakes alone when we encounter them.
