Inscription.
The death of Mrs. Alberta Martin, affectionately known a "Mz. Alberta", symbolizes the passing of an age and the closing of a chapter in the history of the South. As the last known living widow of a Confederate veteran, she was the "Last Link to Dixie". Mrs. Martin's second husband, William Jasper Martin, was a soldier in the Army of Northern Virginia, a band of citizen soldiers that is acknowledged by many historians as being one of the greatest military organizations in the history of warfare.
Led by immortal names such as Lee, Jackson and Stuart, the Army of Northern Virginia, represented, the best hope of the Southern Confederacy in her struggle to defend her independence.
Mrs. Martin spent most of the final years of her life defending the Confederate heritage of her people. She traveled through her native South to dedicate new monuments and museums and defend old banners. With profound appreciation, this monument is dedicated in loving memory of Mrs. Alberta Stewart Martin.
