The Friends of Historic Snee Farm
Charles Pinckney National Historic Site
| | National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior | |
Founding Father Charles Pinckney devoted 42 years of his life to public service. When the last remnant of his Snee Farm plantation became threatened by modern residential development, a host of individuals came to its defense. In 1986 a development company purchased the 1828 historic house and surrounding 25 acres and planned to subdivide the property into 42 homesites. After a rally of grassroots support, multiple preservation organizations, public officials and private individuals joined together to form the Friends of Historic Snee Farm. Their mission was to save this site from development and preserve it for generations to come.
The Friends successfully negotiated a $2 million dollar sale price for the property and began an aggressive fundraising campaign. Local non-profits held historic home tours, raffles and editorial campaigns. Donations came in from across the country from major corporations, non-profit groups and concerned individuals. Led by Mrs. Ann Edwards and Mrs. Nancy Hawk, the Friends of Snee Farm were successful in their fundraising and guaranteed the preservation of this landmark for future generations by donating the property to the National Park Service in 1990, Thanks to the work of local visionaries, the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site opened to the public in May 1995.
