St. Michaels in Talbot County, Maryland — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Saving shorelines & wetlands
| | Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum | |
Shorelines erode naturally. However, in the past 300 years we have eroded shorelines and drained wetlands in the Bay region so much that we have altered the water's clarity and put at risk the health of all the creatures that live in and around the Bay.
Today, citizens are working to restore this damage by creating new wetlands and stopping shoreline erosion. One solution is building living shorelines like this one. This technique serves three purposes: it provides critical wetland habitat, stops erosion and helps filter runoff water through Bay grasses.
