These old pilings, visible in the pond, are the remains of a pier used by the fishermen to bring their catch ashore. As recent as the 1930s, this pond edge was part of the Chesapeake shoreline. A harbor was created when a sand spit grew like a hook from a point of land. It was further shaped by the winds, waves and currents. Beach build-up assisted by storms finally enclosed the harbor mouth, making the fishermen's landing site landlocked.

However, the fishermen continued to use the pier even after the harbor was enclosed by keeping open a waterway through the sand spit, or "gut" to the Bay. Eventually, the constant deposition of sand all along the shoreline forced the fishermen to abandon this landing site.

The new pond of brackish Bay water changed as freshwater springs and rain fed the pond. Vegetation that couldn't tolerate the salt and sand of the shoreline began to thrive here, and a wetlands habitat for birds, insects and amphibians was created where there was once a fishermen's landing. these changes caused by storms, deposition of sand, underground freshwater springs and revegetation have occurred over a relatively short period.
